2006 Ford Mustang FR500GT

Car and Driver has posted a review of the 2006 Ford Mustang FR500GT. Here's an excerpt:

With its Pep Boys-inspired rear wing, fancy stick-on graphics, and a growlingly means-business exhaust note, the King of All Mustangs does not just show up - it sort of presents itself. Its appearance should be accompanied by a "ta-da!"

Such as, "Ta-da! There it is rounding Turn Three!" And "Ta-da! Now it's coming into the pits!"

Ford would like to sell you one. "Ta-da! Thanks for your $225,000! Please enjoy your new full-race, 550-hp Mustang."

Your first question is, of course, "Can I drive it on the street?" The answer: If you live in Hazzard County, maybe.

Road & Track Shelby GT500
  • 2006 SEMA show features a trio of modified Ford Shelby GT500s that achieves an even higher level of Mustang performance

To earn a decent living while amateur racing in the 1940s, Carroll Shelby raised chickens. His first batch of broilers earned him $5,000, but the farm bug didn't last. Shelby went bankrupt when his second group of chickens died.

"My chickens all had limberneck disease, and I was going broke," says Shelby. "One day, I'd been vaccinating chickens and was running late. So I drove out to the racetrack in my overalls. It was about 110 degrees, and I decided to leave the overalls on because I thought they would be cooler to drive in. I won the race, and everyone giggled and laughed, but they ran my picture in the paper in those overalls. I decided, shoot, this is a pretty good deal, and I just kept on doing it."

Boss 302 engine

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 31, 2006 - Ford [NYSE: F] today announced at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show that it is reviving the legendary 5.0-liter 302 cubic inch V-8 engine for the aftermarket with a new line of BOSS 302 crate engines, which will go on sale in early 2007.

Making its debut in 1969, the original BOSS 302 powered a limited production Mustang model sold for two years, which was known as the BOSS 302. The car got its name from the legendary engine that powered the Mustang to a Sports Car Club of American Trans-Am series win in 1970.

"The original BOSS 302 was a race winning engine. Sharing the DNA from the original BOSS 302, the new BOSS 302 begins with a block designed with racing in mind from the beginning," said Jamie Allison, manager, Ford Racing Performance Group. "Whether racing in a sealed engine class, building an all-out drag racing engine or looking for a street performer, the BOSS 302 block and engine family meets the needs of all Ford 302 enthusiasts at a price that is comparable to a performance-prepped stock 302."
