Fuel Pump Failure 1987 Mustang

« Thread started on: Nov 29th, 2003, 3:30pm »
I have gone through 3 fuel pumps in a month and have no idea why. I found the surge plate in the tank had broke loose so I got the tank repaired. I then found a relay under the drivers seat was not allowing the pump to get power so I bypassed it. The third fuel pump I just put in yesterday is making a loud noise and is about to fail and I have no idea why. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?

The only thing that I can think of would be dirty crap in your fuel tank. If you talk to your local rad shop they can boil it for you. I have a question for you now if you would. I have been having some problems with my vehicle lately, and I suspect that it could be the fuel pump. Tell me, what kind of problems were you having when your first fuel pump was dying?

I already had the fuel tank cleaned, but thanks for the thought. The only problem I had before complete failure was that the car would not start sometimes. There is a fuel pressure check you can perform to measure your fuel pressure but I don't have the test equipment. I just depress the pressure relief valve and see if there is fuel pressure. If your fuel pump is weak you will not see much fuel come out. There should be a strong steam of fuel if the pump is working properly.

had a similar problem about a year ago. the car died on my way to work, acted as if the fuel pump died. wouldn't work at all and had no fuel pressure but occasionally it would try to run but sounded like crap. a ford tech friend helped me out and after a lenghty check, we found out the computer was sending mixed signals or no signals to the fuel pump. changed the computer and everything has been good since. don't know if it's true or not but he did say that it could have caused the pump to totally fail after a while.
