Mustang History: 1975

1975 Mustang

Mustang went virtually unchanged for 1975, though steel-belted radial tires became standard, and the Ghia received a restyled half-vinyl roof, with a rectangular "opera window."

Returning with the coupe, hatchback, Ghia and Mach I, the Mustang II brings an optional 302 cid V8 back to the lineup. Its subdued horsepower does little to encourage those who were eyeing the Boss only a few years before. Still, it is useful to compare the Mustang II to the Pontiac Trans Am; GM's ponycar displaces 400 cubic inches and can't even muster 200 horsepower. However, in defense of all automakers, regulations for fuel economy, emissions and safety are severe performance deterrents.

Total U.S. Production: 155,575

The 302 cid V8 returns to Mustang. For clearance, the hood is made longer and a half-inch higher

Road & Track tests the V8 Mach 1 in the September issue and comes away saying: "...Surprise, it really handles."
