Mustang History: 2016

2016 Mustang

The Mustang was fully redesigned for 2015, and for 2016, minor updates include the available SYNC 3 infotainment system, which replaces the previous MyFord Touch. On the GT, secondary turn signals are now incorporated into the hood vents. That model also features new wheels and stripes, while new packages include the Pony, California Special, and Black Accent packages. EcoBoost and V8 GTs can now be ordered with black roofs.

Also introduced for the 2016 model year is the Shelby GT350. The first Shelby Mustang GT350 to feature an independent rear suspension is Dearborn’s answer to the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. The body panels were reshaped into a more aerodynamic and aggressive shape, including a completely new front section, while the GT’s standard 5.0-liter V-8 was replaced by a slightly larger 5.2-liter V-8 delivering 526 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque.

Ford, Shelby, and Hertz unveiled a special run of performance-modified 2016 Ford Mustang GTs named the Shelby GT-H that will be available for rent beginning Memorial Day weekend. As a throwback to the famed Shelby GT350-H “Rent-A-Racer” program of the 1960s, a total of 140 2016 Ford Shelby GT-H’s will be available exclusively through the Hertz Adrenaline Collection at select airport locations in the continental United States.
