Mustang History: 2011
The 2011 Ford Mustang is a carry-over model from the refreshed version in 2010, but with a few significant changes taking place under the hood. New engine choices for the 2011 Mustang include a new 412 horsepower 5.0-liter motor with a class-leading 26 MPG highway mileage. Also new for 2011 is a Duratec 3.7-liter V-6 engine, replacing the old 4.0-liter V-6 the Mustang has used for several years. The new V-6 pumps out 305 horsepower with 31 MPG highway mileage.
The "5.0" fender badge returns for the 2011 Ford Mustang GT. Introduced in 1979 the "5.0" fender badge was used to emphasize the 5-liter 302 cubic-inch Ford small block V-8 under the hood. The "5.0" badge was a mainstay on fox-body Mustangs until 1993.
For 2011, the Shelby GT500 received significant performance enhancements and other upgrades. Arguably the most important of the GT500's upgrades is a new aluminum engine block for the car's supercharged 5.4 L DOHC V8, replacing the cast-iron block used previously. The new block is 102 lbs lighter than the previous cast-iron version, contributing to a reduction in the overall weight of the GT500 compared to the 2010 model. Engine upgrades and a revised exhaust bring horsepower up slightly to 550, as well as an improvement in fuel economy that eliminates the car's gas guzzler tax.
