1996 Mustang

Forgoing the torque-filled pushrod small block V8 that earned a fiercely loyal backing, Ford decides the time has come for more refined engineering to make its way into the Mustang. Despite its lowered displacement, the technologically advanced Modular 4.6-liter single-overhead-cam V8 yields 215 horsepower for the GT, the same as '95.

The SVT Mustang Cobra's aluminum-alloy derivative of the 4.6-liter Modular double-overhead-cam V8 increases output substantially, making 305 horsepower. The Cobra embraces Ford's global approach, using Teksid to cast its engine block in Carmagnola, Italy. Teksid is credited with casting components for Ferrari road and Formula One cars, and the aerospace industry.

"Cobra" occupies the molded rear bumper of the SVT Mustang Cobra, replacing "Mustang." SVT Cobras came in four colors: Laser Red, Crystal White, Black, and Mystic. Mystic was a color-changing paint. Depending on the angle of the light, the cars could look green, purple, or bronze. Mystic is an expensive color. A bottle of touch-up paint is $35, and can only be obtained through licensed SVT dealers. The reason for the markup is that Mystic was developed by BASF, and the green used to make it is the same green used to make U.S. paper currency.

Each version of the 4.6-liter engine is mated to a Borg-Warner T-45 five speed manual transmission, replacing the T-5. Taller and wider with revised gear tooth geometry, the T-45 is smoother and stronger than the T-5.

The 4.6-liter engines are taller than the 5.0L powerplants, requiring more space at the bottom of the engine bay. To compensate, a cross-member is added to the body, which in addition to increasing rigidity, supports the engine and front suspension.

Revised front geometry, castor and camber leads to improved steering precision and feel. The rear suspension utilizes a bigger rear stabilizing bar to balance the updated front suspension. The Cobra enhances handling further with front and rear variable rate springs.

The GT gets a new badge, designating the advanced technology under the hood.

Horizontally opposed taillights are shifted to a vertical configuration, resembling Oros' original. A theme borrowed from the Torino and Mustang II Concept car of the early sixties, tri-bar taillights are one of Mustang's enduring characteristics.

A honeycomb grille appears behind the galloping pony, a good way to distinguish the front of a '96 Mustang from a '95.
